What is passive RFID technology?

RFID, or Radio Frequency Identification, is a method of storing and retrieving data remotely using radio waves. In other words, it allows objects or other items, whether static or moving, to be detected using electromagnetic fields, via a reader, antennas, and RFID chips. The operating frequencies of passive RFID are similar to those of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

The RFID system consists of two entities: a mobile and/or fixed antenna and a tag, usually in the form of a label. It is also common to see it attached to warranty/bank cards or other solid and robust materials to protect it from impact. An RFID tag consists of an electronic chip and an antenna, both mounted on a substrate, which allows them to receive and respond to radio frequencies sent by the transmitter.

The tags are affixed to the item to be identified and can be read without being seen directly, unlike barcodes, which allows for mass and remote reading (from a few centimeters to several tens of meters depending on the size of the chip).

RFID technology has proven itself in many environments and practical use cases. At Solid, we work to advise and support our clients in implementing this technology within their organizations. Management and operational staff have seen rapid and visible results in terms of process simplification and traceability flow automation.
